10 Feel Good Tips For A Healthy Body And Mind Over The Season

My name is Caroline Rossy. I have been linked with the yachting industry for the last 15 years. I have seen the industry grow and also become more and more demanding too. I am now the happy owner of Samasthiti House of Yoga based in Antibes. I teach yoga and also am a life coach advising Crew during their yacht life and transitioning after yachting back into the onshore life! I advise on nutrition, healthy living, massage, to basically all the tools to « FEEL GOOD » in your life.

Here are 10 tips to keep a happy mind and soul on board and more importantly a genuine SMILE!

Working on a boat is already hard so if you don’t look after your body and mind you may finish wrecked or not even finish the season. Or you will be absolutely drained with zero strength and zero mojo and we don't want that so here are 10 tips to follow easily for you to keep a good spirit of mind and maintain positive energy.

TIP NUMBER 1 -

(To remember for next pre season) Prepare your body and mind before the season is taking off.
In taking care of yourself; which means a good diet, sport, yoga, massage and enough rest- ok?

2 -   EXERCISE EVERY MORNING

Get up 15 mins before your normal alarm and do a stretch and breathe, you will feel calmer and more relaxed to start the day! Sit and breath in and out through your nose and do few stretches (see below pics). You may feel lazy as you get on with the season but I can assure you this will be your saver not to feel tired, emotional and grumpy as the season goes! Also to stretch your body everyday and breathe you will start the day on a positive note!

3 - FEEL GRATITUDE EVERY MORNING

After your 15 mins exercise, feel grateful for what you have and where you are. Yes you are working hard and as the season goes on you will be more tired and more sensitive but hey look around!!! Where are you anchored this morning? Porto Fino? Sardinia? Capri? Montenegro? Surrounded by stunning sea views on a beautiful boat right? it could be worth it; no? So wherever you are in your life just sit by the bow or somewhere hidden on the boat and feel gratitude for your life/friends/family/job!You wanted to work on a yacht, nobody has forced you to so simply embrace it and feel grateful. Oh and I forgot it has been proved scientifically that feeling grateful every day as you wake up and for the day does reduce stress and diseases. GRATITUDE GRATITUDE GRATITUDE

4 - EAT HEALTHY

Here is the catch, specially for ladies (sorry!!) We start with good intentions but then being tired and not eating slowly when guests onboard, we tend to "pick" all the time which is really not good on our diet, digestion, stomach and also your butt so PLEASE PLEASE no sweets, no picking at the rest of the guests's dinner because the chef made it available for you late in the evening. No deserts. Try to really eat your breakfast, lunch and dinner and this is it. Try not to mix animal protein and carbo-hydrates as it takes too long to digest and will make you tired. Where possible eat cooked veggies or salad and quinoa, rice, any pasta, couscous seeds whatever the Chef makes (there should always be a veggies/salads/fish or meat/rice,carbohydrate,quinoa dish, chose one or the other) or fish/meat with veggies or salad. Limit the coffee intake, it is no good for the pancreas and the insulin and won’t give you much energy either. It is better to take a nice smoothie in the morning with spirilina and maca (power food) or if not possible some amazing supplements ginseng/chia (ForeverLiving is the best) for a quick boost. Drink plenty of water also as the air conditioner dehydrates your skin and respiratory system. Watching you diet is super important to go through a season with high energy and no bloated stomach!!!! Aloe Vera juice is also extremely good for the digestion. Same advice for ladies and gentleman here!

5 - KEEP YOURSELF DETACHED FROM DRAMAS ON BOAT

As you go through the season there will be some dramas and some tantrums, keep your distance from any unnecessary dramas. Do not feed them and don't get involved yourself!
Living together as a crew is difficult and more difficult if the boat is big, so the best advice is to be nice to everybody and don’t use your colleagues as your bag of shit if you are in a bad mood from lack of sleep, bad day, etc. And don’t allow the others to do the same to you!
If you really really feel not too good one day just breathe and take five minutes to call your family, husband, girlfriend, and vent out with them NOT with your Crew, except if there is one crew member who  you have been working with for a significant time and is very close to you. NO TANTRUM NO DRAMA on board!

6 - TALK TO YOUR LOVED ONES REGULARLY

They are the ones onshore and the ones that love you and won’t judge you if you call them for a little voice cuddles through face time or to hear a nice word to cheer you up if you are a bit down and tired and it is also nice to keep the link with the real world onshore! You are living in a bubble and sometimes this bubble makes you feel that there is nothing else but this boat, it is not true, you have friends and partners, sister, bro who will be super happy to hear your voice to give you some good loving vibes. You miss them but they miss you too so please take a moment regularly to talk to your loved ones; they are your roots and anchor remember…not the boat!

7 - BE GOOD TO THE CAPTAIN, THE CHEF AND THE ENGINEER

This is a rule I have learnt myself when I have started to be linked with the yachting business 15 years ago and it is still relevant!!!! If you hold one of these positions; then be cool towards the chief stew, stew and deckhands, mates, etc…SIMPLE RULE!

8 - NO EGO ALLOWED ON BOATS

This is a real problem on a yacht with 6, 10, 22, 30 or more persons called crew are obliged to live together on a very limited space, even if the boat is huge it is still limited space, you cannot just leave the boat and swim onshore can you? And unfortunately sometimes people use the control and ego to mistreat others, and unfortunately most of the times they are the ones with so called « power » that have a big ego and tend to « abuse » a bit of their authority on others less « powerful » so please please please everybody you can ask a job to be done with humility and kindness. Be clear and to the point with a smile but don’t patronize your crew or co-workers. You are all on the same boat (haha) this is the expression. So you can perfectly be heard by the others without using control or even being snappy and unpleasant! for a very smooth season and great atmosphere on board NO EGO = LOTS OF SMILES

9 - THE OWNERS ARE PRIORITY ONE WHEN ON BOATS OR CHARTER SO WHATEVER THEY WANT IS THE WAY IT IS. ACCEPT IT. THIS IS NOT YOUR BOAT THIS IS THEIRS

And you’re being paid well for those jobs, sometimes the owners will have crazy enquiries, even crazier when it comes to charters. We all have been through the crazy party boats, oh well, most of the year you haven’t to deal with the owner and/or charter so during the season, just detached yourself from any crazy requests and get on with it weither it is in the kitchen, the interior, the deck and of course for the captains and mates… they pay lots of money to run their boats and/or charter them, so they can have unreasonable tastes unfortunately but it is your industry so you might as well just not get affected by those matters.

10 - HAVE A GOOD LAUGH WITH YOUR COLLEAGUE NO ONE IS THERE TO COMPETE. JUST TO GET ON WITH THEIR LIFE AND WORK HARD BUT WITH FLUIDITY

Which basically summaries the ABOVE!
